A quick look at the Penguins' 4-1 victory against Detroit at Joe Louis Arena:

Some news and notes, nuggets and quotes from the Penguins’ 4-1 victory over Detroit at Joe Louis Arena Saturday night:

*** The victory was one of the Penguins’ most gutsy of the season, but could prove to be among the most costly. Evgeni Malkin left the game after going skates-first into the boards early in the third period, and defenseman Kris Letang was a late scratch because of an unspecified problem. Coach Dan Bylsma said he does not know yet if either player could be out for a significant amount of time.

*** Rookie goalie Jeff Zatkoff, a Detroit native, was outstanding, turning aside 28 of the 29 shots the Red Wings threw at him to earn recognition as the game’s No. 2 star. “To come in here and play the Wings was nice,” he said. “And to get a win.” Zatkoff has won five consecutive starts.

*** The victory was the Penguins’ eighth in their past nine games and gives them a 10-point lead over second-place Washington in the Metropolitan Division.

*** Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland received a match penalty and game misconduct for hitting Detroit’s Justin Abdelkader in the head with his shoulder at 19:30 of the opening period. The incident surely will be reviewed by the league, and a suspension seems likely. “I tried to finish my check,” Engelland said. “I’m obviously not trying to hit him in the head or anything like that. I think I catch his chin a little bit before his body. Hopefully, he’s all right.”

*** Special teams were a huge factor in the outcome, as the Penguins scored on two of four power plays while thwarting the Red Wings on five tries with the extra man, including one that lasted five minutes. “I think (special-teams work) was the difference in the game,” center Sidney Crosby said.

*** Malkin had three points, two of them assists, during the first two periods. His second point of the evening was No. 600 in the NHL.

*** With Letang out, rookie Brian Dumoulin was pressed into service and responded with 18 minutes, 10 seconds of solid work in his NHL debut.

*** The Penguins did not have a healthy scratch unless you count winger James Neal, who served the third game of his five-game suspension for kneeing Boston forward Brad Marchand in the head a week ago.

*** Crosby, on the Penguins continuing to win despite losing players in virtually every game: “We stuck with it and found ways. But we’re not making it easy on ourselves, that’s for sure.”
