Skate update--Jan. 3

Newcomer Taylor Pyatt arrived and was on the ice for the Penguins game-day skate at Consol Energy Center in advance of tonight's home game against the New York Rangers.

Defenseman Kris Letang participated and could return from an elbow injury tonight.

Center Evgeni Malkin and injured winger Jayson Megna skated earlier with strength and conditioning coach Mike Kadar. Malkin did not return for the skate, an indication that he won't play tonight. He said Thursday that he might be a game-time decision for the Rangers game as he recovers from a left leg injury.

Defenseman Deryk Engelland rotated in as a winger on the fourth line, a spot he's played before. It's possible he will see some game time on the wing again. Coach Dan Bylsma was asked about that earlier in the week and wouldn't rule out Engelland playing up front again at some point.

The lines:

Chris Kunitz-Sidney Crosby-James Neal

Jussi Jokinen-Brandon Sutter-Brian Gibbons

Taylor Pyatt-Joe Vitale-Craig Adams
