Lots of updates--Feb. 28

Although the outdoor game between the Penguins and Blackhawks scheduled for Saturday night is the major news in Chicago today -- for instance, the consensus seems to be that the ice is good, or as Sidney Crosby called it, "awesome" -- there were some updates from the Penguins.

*Defenseman Paul Martin had surgery on his broken right hand Thursday. Coach Dan Bylsma said doctors decided that option would lead to quicker healing. Martin got hurt while playing for Team USA at the Olympics.

*The major elbowing penalty to Penguins winger Tanner Glass in the third period of Thursday's 6-5 shootout loss to Montreal has been rescinded by the NHL. That certainly seems like the right call -- replays clearly showed that the Canadiens' Alexei Emelin got his stick and glove up, and those were what hit him in the face when Glass checked him -- but it doesn't undo the effect on the outcome. Montreal scored during the ensuing five-minute power play to tie the game at 5, forcing overtime. Coach Dan Bylsma, while noting that Glass was "flabbergasted" by the call and now is exonerated, went out of his way to point out that it was a tough call for the referees. The play is not reviewable in-game.

*During a post-practice family skate on the outdoor rink, Penguins defenseman Kris Letang skated. We believe it was his first time on the ice since he had a stroke Jan. 30. Bylsma called it a "casual skate."
