Penguins 3, Bruins 2 (overtime)

Some news and notes, numbers and quotes from the Penguins’ 3-2 overtime victory against Boston at TD Garden Monday night:

*** Evgeni Malkin scored the game-winner, his second goal of the game and tenth of the season, 32 seconds into overtime, as he took a cross-ice feed from Sidney Crosby and beat Boston goalie Tuukka Rask from near the top of the right circle.

*** Crosby had a goal and two assists after being shut out in the previous two games, while defenseman Kris Letang set up the Penguins’ first two goals and contributed to Malkin’s game-winner by driving to the net to distract the Boston defensemen. “They led the charge tonight,” coach Mike Johnston said. “You talk about Sid and [Malkin] and Kris, those are the guys who have to step up. … You look for your leaders. When you don’t feel like you’re playing your best, they have to rise up. And they did tonight.”

*** Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves to become the 31st goaltender in NHL history to earn 300 career regular-season victories. He picked up No. 300 in his 547th game, fewer than anyone who has reached that milestone except Jacques Plante (521) and Andy Moog (543). “I’ve been fortunate to play with good teams,” Fleury said.

*** An unidentified teammate (or several) covered Fleury in shaving gel while he was doing a television interview on the bench after the game. “When I find out, there’s going to be some payback,” he said, smiling.

*** The victory allowed the Penguins to remain even with the New York Islanders for first place in the Metropolitan Division, and salved the sting of consecutive losses to New York over the weekend. “We wanted to bounce back after the two disappointing losses,” Letang said.

*** Penguins winger Bean Bennett appeared to injure his right knee on a hit by Boston defenseman Kevan (cq) Miller late in the second period. Bennett went to the locker room, but returned to the bench for the start of the third, although Johnston was reluctant to use him. “We just didn’t feel in the third that it was worth pushing him,” Johnston said. “They felt that he could go back out – he tried it – but I just didn’t think he was sharp.”

*** Boston’s lineup was seriously diluted by injuries, but the Bruins turned in an impressive performance. “They played really well,” Letang said. “They’re a tough team to play against. They’re very good defensively and have a great goaltender.”

*** Crosby has not gone more than two games without a point since a five-game dry spell Oct. 31-Nov. 10, 2009.

*** The past seven regular-season games between the Penguins and Bruins have been decided by one goal.

*** The Penguins are 8-1-1 in their past 10 games against Boston.

*** Bruins defenseman Joe Morrow, the Penguins’ first-round draft choice in 2011, scored the second Boston goal, his first NHL point and goal. Milan Lucic also scored for Boston.

*** Winger Jayson Megna made his 2014-15 Penguins debut, replacing Zach Sill in the lineup.

*** Craig Adams picked up an assist – his first of the season and 100th in the NHL – on Crosby’s goal.

*** Malkin has a five-game points streak.

*** Penguins LW Chris Kunitz failed to get a point against Boston for the first time in 10 games.

*** The Penguins will face Toronto Wednesday at 7:38 p.m. at Consol Energy Center.
