Martin resumes practicing; Perron replaces Hornqvist on power play

A few notes from today’s practice at Consol Energy Center.

-Defenseman Paul Martin resumed practicing today. Currently on injured reserve due to an undisclosed injury, Martin seemed optimistic he could play in Wednesday’s home game against the Bruins. Martin said, “Tomorrow I hope I’ll be in. I think I will.”

-Center Marcel Goc (illness) and left winger Chris Kunitz (doctor appointment) returned to practice Tuesday after skipping Monday’s session. Defenseman Simon Despres (undisclosed) returned to practice Tuesday after leaving Monday’s session early.

-New left winger David Perron found himself in the slot on the team’s first power-play unit. That spot is normally occupied by right winger Patric Hornqvist who is sidelined due to an undisclosed injury. Perron, like Hornqvist, is a right-handed shot.

“Originally on that top power-play unit, we had Hornqvist in the slot for the majority of time,” coach Mike Johnston said. “We like a right-hand shot in the slot and with Perron, that gives us a right-hand shot in the slot there. Also, he’s playing with [center Sidney Crosby] on the same line so it’s an easy conversion into the power play.

-The Penguins’ second and third lines had a bit of a different look today. Basically, right wingers Beau Bennett and Bryan Rust flip-flopped between the second and third lines. The second line had Nick Spaling, Evgeni Malkin and Bennett. The third line had Chris Kunitz, Brandon Sutter and Bennett.

-Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff and defenseman Derrick Pouliot were named to the AHL’s all-star game.
