A quick look at the Penguins’ 3-0 loss to the New York Rangers Wednesday night at Consol Energy Center:

*** The defeat snapped the Penguins’ six-game winning streak on home ice and dropped them six points behind the second-place Rangers in the Metropolitan Division standings.

*** New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist stopped 34 shots to record his 58th career shutout, four of which have come against the Penguins. “He’s a good goalie,” Penguins winger Conor Sheary said. “You run into that sometimes.”

*** The loss left the Penguins with a tenuous grip on the second wild-card playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins [27-19-7] and New Jersey Devils have 61 points each, but the Penguins have played two fewer games.

*** Penguins center Sidney Crosby was held scoreless, ending a series of impressive streaks. He had at least one goal in seven consecutive games, one or more goals in nine games in a row at home and 11-game points streaks both overall and at Consol Energy Center.

*** Penguins defenseman Trevor Daley left the game during the first period with an undisclosed injury. He got tied up with Rangers forward Jesper Fast before sliding back-first into the goalpost at 10:23. He took one more 20-second shift before adjourning to the locker room. Coach Mike Sullivan said after the game that he did not have any information on Daley’s injury.

*** New York got the only goal it needed at 8:34 of the opening period, when Kevin Hayes tossed a Tanner Glass rebound past Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury.

*** The Penguins are 6-2-1 in their past nine regular-season home games against New York.

*** Crosby, on the impact of potentially losing Daley: “He’s a really good puck-mover. A good skater. He can skate us out of trouble in a hurry. So I think he brings that. He played some power play, too, and has been really good there. … We'll have to have somebody step in there and make up for that loss.”

*** The loss ended a stretch of six consecutive games inside the Metropolitan in which the Penguins picked up at least one point [5-0-1].

*** Penguins defenseman Kris Letang, on how the game played out: “I think we had control of that game for the most part. We just couldn’t buy a goal. It’s tough when you play against a team like that. They have a lot of experience. They play well with the lead.”

*** Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta was a minus-1, just the third time he’s had a negative plus-minus in the past 22 games.

*** Sullivan on Phil Kessel, who has three goals in the past 14 games: “Obviously, when Phil scores, we’re a better team.”
