Beginning Saturday, free agents can sign with teams other than their former club. The Pirates must also decide this week whether or not to exercise Rod Barajas' $3.5 million option. It seems the Pirates will decline the option but continue to talk with Barajas about returning if they cannot find an adequate replacement in free agency or a trade.

Nov. 9 marks the deadline for free agents to accept arbitration from their former club, though this will not affect the Pirates due to changes in the new CBA.
