The Pirates on Saturday activated catcher Chris Stewart from the 15-day disabled list and optioned catcher Tony Sanchez to Class AAA Indianapolis.

Stewart, 32, had arthroscopic surgery to repair the meniscus in his right knee March 19. He recently went 6 for 15 in four games on a rehabilitation assignment at Indianapolis, and also played three rehab games with Class A Bradenton.

Sanchez, 25, had a hit in all six games he played with the Pirates this season, including a walk-off single in a 16-inning victory.

The Pirates acquired Stewart from the New York Yankees this winter to back up Russell Martin and allow Sanchez another year of playing every day in the minors to continue his development.
