Pirates trade Justin Sellers to White Sox

Bill Brink about 4 hours ago

CINCINNATI -- The Pirates have traded minor league infielder Justin Sellers to the Chicago White Sox, according to a source familiar with the move.

Sellers, 29, did not appear in the majors with the Pirates this season. He began the season on the disabled list because of an injury to his left Achilles’ tendon. The Pirates recently put him on waivers, and when he cleared, they recalled him from his rehab assignment and sent him outright to Class AAA Indianapolis.

It is not immediately known what the Pirates got in return for Sellers, but it likely isn’t much, possibly a minor leaguer, player to be named later or cash.

Pirates acquire Soria from Tigers

Bill Brink about 4 hours ago

Update 7:01 p.m.: The trade is official and has been announced.

Update: The trade is complete, but not yet announced. The Pirates will send Class AA Altoona shortstop JaCoby Jones to the Tigers for Soria.

CINCINNATI -- The Pirates and Tigers are making progress on a trade that would send right-handed reliever Joakim Soria to Pittsburgh, according to sources.

The Pirates have been trying to upgrade their bullpen in advance of the deadline and believed they strengthened it by adding Joe Blanton. Soria would give them another late-inning reliever to pair with Jared Hughes, Tony Watson and Mark Melancon

Soria, 31, is a free agent after this season and is making $7 million this season. He has a 2.85 ERA in 41 innings and has saved 23 games.

Pirates trade for Joe Blanton

Bill Brink about 21 hours ago

Update: Vance Worley has been designated for assignment to make room for Joe Blanton.

MINNEAPOLIS -- If the overnight Cole Hamels and Carlos Gomez intrigue wasn’t enough for you, I present: Joe Blanton.

The Pirates acquired Blanton from the Kansas City Royals early this morning in exchange for cash considerations. Blanton, 34, was designated for assignment Tuesday when the Royals traded for Johnny Cueto.

He is making $1 million this season.

In 15 games, four starts, Blanton has a 3.89 ERA and 40 strikeouts compared to seven walks in 412/3 innings. The Oakland Athletics originally drafted Blanton in the first round in 2002. He has since played for the A’s, the Philadelphia Phillies, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels in addition to the Royals.

Blanton profiles as a long reliever for the Pirates, and his strikeout-to-walk ratio indicates there could be something there.

He won a World Series with the Phillies in 2008. He has a career 2.3 batters per nine walk rate, which was 1.9 batters per nine from 2011 on. In six of his 11 relief appearances this year, he pitched more than one inning, suggesting he could serve as a long reliever. Vance Worley is out of options.

Blanton is expected to join the Pirates today in Cincinnati, at which point they will make a corresponding move.
