Pirates put Morton on 60-day DL

ATLANTA -- The Pirates placed right-hander Charlie Morton on the 60-day disabled list Wednesday evening because of the sports hernia that will ultimately end his season, according to MLB.com’s transactions page.

The pain in Morton’s groin, hip and butt intensified while facing the final batter in his most recent start, though the injury had bothered Morton since June. Morton was scheduled to visit Dr. Thomas Byrd, the doctor who repaired the torn labrum in Morton’s left hip in October 2011, in Nashville this week.

The Pirates claimed right-hander Chaz Roe off waivers from the New York Yankees to fill the 40-man spot Morton vacated. Roe appeared briefly in the majors in 2013 and ’14 for the Arizona Diamondback and Yankees, and the Yankees designated him for assignment Sunday to make room for the return of Masahiro Tanaka.
