Pirates outright three to Indy

Bill Brink 4 years ago

The Pirates sent infielder Jeff Clement, catcher Eric Fryer and right-handed reliever Daniel McCutchen outright to Class AAA Indianapolis Monday.

Fryer, who along with Clement was designated for assignment last week to make room for waiver claims Ali Solis and Chad Beck, elected free agency. Clement has the option to elect free agency because he has previously been sent outright off a 40-man roster. Either way, he and McCutchen will be declared minor league free agents Friday.

McCutchen named a Gold Glove finalist

Bill Brink 4 years ago

Major League Baseball managers and assistant coaches have named Andrew McCutchen as a finalist for the Gold Glove award.

Braves centerfielder Michael Bourn and Reds centerfielder Drew Stubbs were also nominated.

Bourn, one of the best defenders in the game, had a 22.4 Ultimate Zone Rating, according to Fangraphs.com, which led all center fielders. UZR attempts to quantify how many runs a player saves or allows due to his fielding. McCutchen had a minus-6.9 UZR, Stubbs a 6.8 rating.

Bourn also saved 24 runs above average, according to Baseball Info Solutions' Defensive Runs Saved calculations.

The winners will be announced Tuesday on ESPN2 at 9 p.m.

137 players become free agents

Bill Brink 4 years ago

According to the MLB Player's Association, 137 players became free agents after the conclusion of the World Series. Courtesy of ESPNNewYork.com, here is the full list.

You will notice Hisanori Takahashi is not on this list, but I have been told he is considered a free agent despite his service time.

Rod Barajas can become a free agent if the Pirates decline his $3.5 million option, which has no buyout. The team must make a decision by Wednesday. They must also exercise Pedro Alvarez's $700,000 option by that time.

Saturday, players can sign with teams other than their previous club. The Pirates have five days to negotiate exclusively with Jason Grilli, the only free agent they may want back. Takahashi, Chad Qualls and Kevin Correia are almost certainly gone.

Shots Across the Bow: Offseason begins

Bill Brink 4 years ago

Concluding with a Sergio Romo inside fastball that surprised Miguel Cabrera, the Giants won the World Series, their second title in three years. Pablo Sandoval was named the Series' most valuable player after hitting .500 with three home runs.

Coverage of the Giants with the San Francisco Chronicle.

Beginning Saturday, free agents can sign with teams other than their former club. The Pirates must also decide this week whether or not to exercise Rod Barajas' $3.5 million option. It seems the Pirates will decline the option but continue to talk with Barajas about returning if they cannot find an adequate replacement in free agency or a trade.

Nov. 9 marks the deadline for free agents to accept arbitration from their former club, though this will not affect the Pirates due to changes in the new CBA.

A rundown of offseason dates.

Shots Across the Bow (early edition): Keep 'em coming

Bill Brink 4 years ago

As soon as the World Series ends, we will start with our free agency preview, our arbitration eligibles series and coverage of offseason moves. But the lack of game coverage gives us more time to address some questions you may have.

These questions can be about the Pirates specifically or baseball in general, on the field or off. Send them to bbrink@post-gazette.com or msanserino@post-gazette.com and we can answer them here. Put "Q& A" in the subject line so we know we can use them on the blog.

Meantime, shield your eyes from the Steelers' uniforms today and make sure to load up on bottled water if you're anywhere near the eastern seaboard.
