CB Da'Quan Davis no longer with Penn State football team

NEW YORK, NY — Rising senior cornerback Da’Quan Davis is no longer on the Penn State football team, James Franklin confirmed Wednesday to the Post-Gazette.

Davis, who saw his role decrease since the 2012 season where he played in every game on defense and special teams, is the second scholarship defensive back to leave the program this spring.

Cornerback Kasey Gaines, who didn’t appear in a game during his two seasons with the team, left the program in March.

“Da’Quan is no longer with the team,” Franklin said. “I keep my comments pretty limited on those things, but we wish him the best, but yeah, he’s no longer with the program. That’s also why we don’t necessarily release things if we don’t have to because I want him to be able to focus on graduating and finishing up his academics.”

Davis played in six games last season and recorded three tackles. With Penn State having a plethora of young cornerbacks on the roster, plus the addition of both four-star corners John Reid and Garrett Taylor who arrive next month, the Nittany Lions are poised to be loaded in the secondary in the coming years.

Returning starter Trevor Williams is set to team up with sophomore cornerback Grant Haley. Sophomore Christian Campbell is also in the mix. Redshirt freshman Daquan Worley, Reid and Taylor are expected to compete for the fourth corner spot.

Franklin said Tuesday the team’s overall scholarship number was around 81 or 82. The Nittany Lions put walk-on linebacker Von Walker on scholarship following the conclusion of spring ball and the team doesn’t have any scholarship specialists as it works to return to full strength following scholarship limitations stemming from the NCAA sanctions.
