Six Pirates file for arbitration

Bill Brink 10 years ago

Six Pirates were among the 146 players who filed for salary arbitration, according to the list released Tuesday by the players' association.

Neil Walker, Gaby Sanchez, Pedro Alvarez, Mark Melancon, Vin Mazzaro and Travis Snider were the six remaining Pirates eligible for arbitration and all six filed. The more important deadline comes Friday, when the player and his representation exchange salary figures with the teams.

The filing is procedural and means only that none of the players reached an agreement. Hearings begin Feb. 1, but most players agree to terms before then.

Players with at least three but fewer than six years of major league service time, or those who rank in the top 22 percent of players with more than two but fewer than three years of service time, are eligible for arbitration. If a player's case reaches a hearing, a three-person panel of arbitrators hears arguments for the player's submitted figure and the team's figure. They then award a one-year contract, which is not guaranteed, at one salary figure or the other.
